British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has affirmed that the crisis of irregular migrants crossing via small boats represents a shared European challenge that no single country can address alone. He emphasized the need to enhance cooperation with France and international partners to combat human trafficking networks and reduce dangerous crossings.

In a statement ahead of his talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in London, Burnham stated that the progress made during the current summer reflects what can be achieved through bilateral cooperation. He warned that smuggling networks continue to adapt their methods to circumvent security measures.

He added that both countries need to respond swiftly and stay ahead of the criminal networks facilitating these crossings, asserting that cooperation with Paris and international partners aims to strengthen border control and prevent smugglers from exploiting migrants.

Meanwhile, British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the UK is working to increase the number of personnel tasked with preventing the launch of small boats and pursuing the gangs behind them to record levels. She noted that joint efforts have resulted in foiling over 48,000 crossing attempts and a decline in small boat arrivals, alongside achieving record levels in the deportation and repatriation of individuals residing illegally.

The British government reported that this summer recorded the lowest number of arrivals via small boats since 2020, confirming that London and Paris are working to enhance security deployment on the French coasts to counter new smuggling methods. This includes deploying an additional team of 45 personnel in the coming weeks, increasing French resources allocated to this area to three times their current level.

Burnham is set to discuss with Macron joint issues including combating migrant crossings via small boats, strengthening European defense, and supporting the economy in both countries. Additionally, they will discuss European support for Ukraine as winter approaches, efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring stability in the Middle East, as well as enhancing cooperation between the United Kingdom and the European Union to stimulate economic growth.
